Mémoire’s fourth stanza would appear to be the site of a pun formed paronymically around the resemblence linking “le suicide” to “le souci d’eau”. Yet, taking Jacques Lacan’s hermeneutic insight that at the heart of the dynamics of repression one finds the letter, the present intervention seeks to locate in this play on words perhaps less a deliberate textual effect produced by the poet than the constitution of a signifier in the Lacanian sense of the term. We might thus read the text as the transcription of a dream, one which deserves to be interpreted in the light of the numerous displacements, substitutions, and transformations it produces.
