How should one interpret the opening phrase of “Solde”? The article does not aim to choose one of the two opposing interpretations of Rimbaud’s positions on “the Jewish question”, but seeks rather to note the links, in dictionaries of the period and in certain “left-wing” discourses, between the word “Jew”, wealth, usury, and commercial dishonesty. The article stresses the constitutive and parodical polyphony of the poem that cannot be read as if it was a direct expression of Rimbaud’s thought.
