The following exegesis of “Angoisse” discusses both the early reception of the text, focusing on the two-fold spatial and musical polysemia of the term hauteurs (heights), as well as problems in translating and/or conceptually transposing the word “Illumination”. Rather than a thematic account of these problems, we trace the emergence of a textuality of affect maintaining an irresolvable tension between time and space, melos and logos running through Rimbaud’s poem.
