Taking as a starting point the “jumble” of the Essais, the philological perspective adopted here attempts to identify any sufficiently distinct stylistic traits. The analysis then aims at identifying not the opinions of Michel de Montaigne, but the virtual thought and the implicit morality conveyed by his words.
