A history of the notion of blending. —This paper explores the history of the notion of blending. It is argued that this notion was first given a theoretical status in the neogrammarian movement, under the rame of contamination, coined by Hermann Paul. Contamination is closely related to analogy, a notion which was pressed roto service in order to accourt for some exceptions to phonetic laves. Because the focus was on unintentional instances, the study of contaminations laid the framework for the first systematic analyses of speech errons and accidentai blends.
The mostly synchronic and morphological study of lexical blends constitutes another Strand of research which seems to be posterior to the neogrammarian school and relatively independent from it, though both intersect in some studies. Particular emphasis is placed on this Strand, its evolution, and on the various definitions and typologies of lexical blends which have been proposed in the literature.
The last part of the paper tries to map the course of a more recent lire of research which is rooted in cognitive linguistics. This lire of research, as is shown, brings back a theoretical pattern that is, in some respects, reminiscent of the neogrammarians. Keywords : history of linguistics, blending, contamination, neogramxnarians, cognitive linguistics.

Blends : what's at stake with these plays on words ? —This article expounds the most typical features of blends as well as the empirical and theoretical issues they ralse. The approaches that have been proposed to deal with them are presented. The last section gives criteria alming at disentangling blends from the constructs they have often been confizsed with.
Keywords : compounding, extragrammatical, haplology, shortening, clipping, secretive affixation, patterns of interpretation.

Blends : when the overlap is blended out. —This study aims at providing a precise theoretical framework for the analysis of how blends are formed, illustrated by a study of neological blends taken from the Spanish press. This analysis includes a typology of the formation stressing the criterion of overlapping, a precise terminology proposed, and an analysis of the various criteria which go roto making up blends, in particular criteria related to homophony.
Keywords : blending, blends, homophony, neology, lexical creation.

Blending and neology. — Relations between lexical blending and neology are rarely the main focus in studies about this morphological process. This paper alms at assessing the role of lexical blending as a neological process. A Humber of lexical studies will be considered, which will be an opportunity to highlight the issues related to the nature of the units observed in these studies. It torrs out that, in these works, the blends which are generally analyzed are fancifill neologisms, which is Hot representative of those used by the speakers. Ways of overcoming these issues will be considered, while examining recent blends to demonstrate the vitality of this process in French.
Keywords : lexical blending, neology, creativity.

Looking back at studies on blends. —This article offers an overview of several key issues and changes in the field of blending studies using data coming malnly from English, French and Modern Hebrew. It discusses the terminology used in French and English, the defining criteria of the concept which have been adopted in the literature, the distinction between blending and compounding, the variety of disciplinary and methodological approaches taken in the last three decades and novel avenues of research which might shed fresh light on the complexity of lexical blending.
Keywords : lexical blending, word-formation, extragrammatical morphology, English, French, Hebrew.

Blends in French and German. A structural explanation of the differences. — In this article, blending is considered as a deliberate extra-grammatical morphological opeation in the sense of Natural Morphology. This implies that blending is rooted in universal cognitive capacities, on the one hand, and in the grammatical competence that speakers of a particular language have, on the other. Two corpora of French and German blends are analysed on the basis of a typology taking roto accourt the extra- grammatical nature of blending. In fact, the similarities between the blends of the two languages, revealed by the contrastive analysis, car be attributed to universal cognitive factors such as the preference for an iconic relation between the conceptuel and the morphological structure of words, whereas the differences may be explained on accourt of well-known structural differences between French and Germen in the domalns of prosody and morphology.

Anthropole, Unithèque, Nespresso and other composite rames at the university and in the city of Lausanne. —Our recent studies (Vorger 2011, 2012) have been centred on a double corpus of neologisms taken from slam lyrics and epitextual and peritextual writings connected to this movement. It was shown to be highly neologenic and that the morphological and what we termed the phraseological matrix were the most fiuitfill oves. This study focused on the code in which these neologisms were disseminated, the oral code for the lyrics and the written for the paratext. Continuing on from these analyses, the question of blends, or composite words as we terni them, is raised in a different context : the vector of dissemination in this case being presumably the written code. The university and urban environxnents
279 are characterised by signboards, though dissemination tan take effect orally as well. The case of Lausanne is rich in lexical creativity, but what forets does it take, what are the main factors and fonctions of neology in this context and what becomes of these blends in the long run ? The way these expressions are formed, what fonction they fizlfil and what factors encourage them will be analysed from a corpus of examples taken from the university environrnent (Anthropole building, Uniscope paper, Unicard tard, etc.) and the urban ("Empoubellisson notre ville") and advertising contexts (Nespresso).
Keywords : blends, lexicogenic matrix, fonction, terminology.

Blending as a satirical ploy in Le Journal du jeudi. — Although there are disagreements about the criteria for identifying and categorizing lexical blends, they are no less productive than other neological processes, and thus deserve proper study. How far do the theories on blending accourt for the manifestations created in and disseminated through the media ? That is the question that this article seeks to answer. To do so, it analyses twenty blends taken from Le Journal du Jeudi, a satirical weekly, which has set itself the goal of contributing to consolidating democracy by easing tensions in national public life. The article highlights the main types of blends in ternis of generally accepted morphological and phonological processes. The semantic features are also studied to reveal the fonctions assigned to these artificial units. Incidentally, the criteria are reviewed to distinguish blends from related phenomena.
Keywords : lexicology, blend, typicality, semantics, satire.

Neologisms in the press and how they are propagated. — In this paper reflects on the use the Spanish press makes of certain neologisms, especially based on the way they are formed and the subject field in which they are found. As the concentration of wealth and therefore the scientific-technical development are located ahnost exclusively in economically dominantpowers, the creationprocess is quintessentially the neological loan from technical and commercial fields. It is therefore logical to speak of specialized neology in the press, not just in highly specialized texts. It is, of course, determined by the context in which they are used, for the source in which we analyze ternis that have become widespread, but which are still nonetheless new ternis or neonyms.
