Maxime Du Camp's texts set in Italy provide a contrasting portrait of a writer who recounts, a journalist, committed witness, and storyteller. There is, however, no way to resolve the continuity between writings that we consider separately. The author accepts the idea of a separate literature no more than the professionalization of a journalism that is abandoning the field of belles lettres. His work bespeaks the rejection of the opposition between writer and écrivant.
