The studies put forward here (Montaigne, Rousseau, Nerval, Baudelaire, Flaubert, Proust, Giono, Durrell, Littell, and Houellebecq) constitute an exercise in anthropological method. Borrowing their tools from Marcel Mauss and Paul Diel, they analyse the tear which separates many works of literature from the modern world.
