Pascal’s argument concerning the “disproportion of man” regards time as well as space. And we must also take into account the fact that in new science and metaphysics (especially Gassendi) the traditional notion of eternity had been absorbed by that of infinite time, as a continuous and homogeneous flow. On this background of questions, the article analyzes the positions of libertines, such as Naudé and La Mothe, le Vayer and a clandestine author, that of Theophrastus redivivus (1659).
