Gianni Paganini, “Proportion and ‘Disproportion’ of Man? Pascal, Gassendi, and the French free-thinkers facing infinity of time”
Pascal’s argument concerning the “disproportion of man” regards time as well as space. And we must also take into account the fact that in new science and metaphysics (especially Gassendi) the traditional notion of eternity had been absorbed by that of infinite time, as a continuous and homogeneous flow. On this background of questions, the article analyzes the positions of libertines, such as Naudé and La Mothe, le Vayer and a clandestine author, that of Theophrastus redivivus (1659).
Keywords: Blaise Pascal, Pierre Gassendi, infinite time, eternity, free-thinkers.
Nicole Gengoux, “A History of Religions in the Theophrastus redivivus. Between Eternal Return, Decline, and Progress of Man”
In the atheist tract Theophrastus redivivus (1659), time is cyclical and the world eternal and non-providential. Within it, however, one also finds a history of religions that corresponds to a degradation of knowledge: rather than a factual history, it is a “genealogy” of error that takes the form of a progressive removal from an original nature. This also renders the reverse movement possible, i.e. that of a progress of “natural reason,” conceived as both sensible and individual.
Keywords: cyclical time, eternity, history, genealogy, etymology, origin, model, progress, degradation, natural reason.
Anna Lisa Schino, “‘History’ versus ‘metaphysics’ in the works by Gabriel Naudé”
All Gabriel Naudé’s writings represent a battle against error and irrationality not in the name of absolute values, but using history. Naudé proposes a method of verification which he calls « la censure » and which alone can offer true knowledge, that of proven facts. History replaces metaphysics as the basis of knowledge. It also has an educational function since it serves to « guérir du sot » by training people not to believe lightly.
Keywords: Gabriel Naudé, erudition, history, models of historical inquiry, demystification of myth, emancipation of minds.
Lorenzo Bianchi, “Teaching politics and history. Gabriel Naudé’s Bibliographia politica”
Naudé’s Bibliographia politica (1633), written at the request of his friend Gaffarel, reviews the books and the method useful for studying politics. Translated into French in 1642, this rich text deals with the political function of religion, the ordinary and the extraordinary administration of the State, or the social life and the police (self control and social control). The text also reflects on the relationship between political wisdom and history and on the separation between ethics and politics.
Keywords: libertinage érudit, political philosophy, political wisdom, history, stoicism, ethics, dissimulation.
382Jean-Michel Gros, “‘To each person his own history’. La Mothe le Vayer, between Epicurus and Machiavelli”
Between Naudé and La Mothe Le Vayer, two conceptions of history – the one rationalist and the other sceptical – seem be opposed to each other. What is basically at stake is the notion of “historicity”. Naudé, faithful to Machiavelli, adheres to a conception of history as cyclic (or repetitive) and therefore predictable, whereas La Mothe Le Vayer, as an Epicurean, leaves a large space to chance in the occurrence of events. Nevertheless, perhaps we might envisage a reconciliation between these two authors.
Keywords: applied science, predictability, coup d’état, aleatory materialism, religious criticism.
Laurence Giavarini, “A libertine writing of history? The example of César Vichard de Saint-Réal”
On the fringes of the “erudite libertines”, César Vichard de Saint-Réal’s practice of literarizing the history nevertheless proceeds from a libertine action. Anti-devote statements, machiavellian reading of political power: three writings, De l’usage de l’histoire (1671), Dom Carlos (1672), La Conjuration des Espagnols contre la République de Venise (1674), reveal all the more clearly the powers of writing the history since their author does not belong to professional historiography.
Keywords: César Vichard de Saint-Réal, history, historiographer, conjuration, historical short story, libertine action, falsification, anti-Spanish libel.
History and Atomism in the Guiseppe Valetta’s Istoria filosofica (1697-1704)”
The advent of modernity in Naples is characterized by an ambiguous relation to erudition and historical filiations. While the movement of the novatores was characterized by the rejection of erudition in favor of experimentation, the recourse to historical argument was often used tactically in the battle against the party of the Ancients. Hence, the Istoria filosofica (1697-1704) by G. Valetta is an entirely new historical reconstruction legitimizing the use of atomism by the moderns.
Keywords: modernity, Naples, libertas philosophandi, experimentation, atomism.
Nicolas Piqué, « Les controverses, l’origine et l’histoire »
Nicolas Piqué, “Controversies, Origins, and History”
This article analyzes the paradoxical advent of a new temporal regime. It is a new regime because it combines the past and present in a novel way, and in a paradoxical 384mode because it results from an initial will to defend tradition. In it the order of effect is privileged over that of intentions. The status of the origin will in particular be examined as the foundation of the traditional temporal regime, and as an object of criticism that brings about the condition of a new representation of history.
Keywords: controversy, origin, critique, discontinuity, Bossuet, Port-Royal, Richard Simon, Jean Claude.
Masako Tanigawa, “Bayle and the 1680s history”
In the seventeenth century, the history was the subject of religious controversies between Catholics and Protestants. This article aims to clarify Bayle’s position, linked with the texts of Jurieu and Arnauld, which discuss 1680s historical events, such as Popish Plot, Affair of the Regale and Toulouse Project. We will see that these controversies led Bayle to develop his reflections on history, politics and morals.
Keywords: Pierre Bayle, Pierre Jurieu, Antoine Arnauld, Popish Plot, Affair of the Regale, Toulouse Project.
385Isabelle Ledoux, “Spinoza, Bayle, and History. On the Range and Limits of Interpretation”
Bayle and Spinoza share a common outlook on history, which they both understand to follow a causality of passions, and on historical writing, which they both see as shaped more by the their authors’ affects than by a concern for facts. They moreover both use interpretation as a method that allows correcting distortions introduced by the reconstitution of facts. When applied to his own texts, however, the principles of Bayle reveal the limits of his method and the differences that exist between Spinoza and himself.
Keywords: history, interpretation, spinozism, historical causality, affects.
Catherine Volpilhac-Auger, “The Origin or Foundation Scrutinized by Reason. The Births of Rome in the Eighteenth Century”
The birth of Rome forms a noteworthy historiographical object in the eighteenth century: taking their departure in the same ancient sources, it is told in radically different ways. Comparing the texts of the most traditional historians (Catrou, Vertot, Rollin) as well as those of the philosopher-historians (Montesquieu, Mably) reveals important interpretative biases, but also how a political history can be based on a history of mores.
Keywords: history, reason, the century of Enlightenment, philosophy, ideology, heroes, legend, antiquity.
Maria Susana Seguin, “Fontenelle, history of knowledge and historical epistemology”
When he died, Fontenelle left unfinished a fragment entitled Sur l’histoire. This text extends on the one hand the gnoseological reflection at work in well-known writings such as the Digression sur les Anciens et les Modernes, the Histoire des Oracles and De l’origine des fables. But he also offers a reflection on a historiographic writing method that the author will implement as secretary of the Royal Academy of Sciences responsible for the annual composition of his Histoire.
Keywords: history, Fontenelle, historical epistemology, modernity, history of science
Myrtille Méricam-Bourdet, “Chance and necessity in Voltaire’s historical works”
The study questions the causal system present in Voltaire’s historical works, and tests the theoretical discourse held by Voltaire on determinism. While rejecting providentialism, the historian adopts a human point of view which sometimes sees contingencies at work, far from the abstract point of view highlighted in other philosophical texts dealing with the problem in general.
Keywords: historical works, causal system, determinism, chance, necessity.
Giuseppina D’Antuono, “Diderot and his innovative conception of useful, cross-border and ‘retrospective’ history”
The article analyzes Diderot’s research of a new history, which has not yet been the subject of a historiographic study. His conception of history is related to geography and philosophy. Diderot criticises the historians of the Academy and develops a method of formation, without neglecting the ancient sources. Its history is cross-border, retrospective and useful to shed light on the origins of present evils: feudal privileges and authoritarian political forms.
Keywords: Diderot, Enlightenment, eighteenth century, cross-border history, retrospective method, usefulness of history, ancient sources, Tacitus, Seneca.
388Anna M. Vileno, Robert J. Wilkinson, “Isaac de Lapeyrère’s commentary on the Pentateuch (1671)”
This article demonstrates that Isaac de Lapeyrère wrote the translation of the Pentateuch (1671) conventionally attributed to De Marolles. The commentary attached to the translation is a deliberate attempt to subvert censorship of the pre-Adamite theory by disseminating it in a vernacular yet authorised bible. The comparative material adduced in the commentary upon the laws and rites found in Exodus and Leviticus is contextualised in the developing appreciation of comparatism and of its subsequent controversial uses.
Keywords: Isaac de Lapeyrère, Michel de Marolles, Biblical translation, vernacular translation, pre-Adamite theory, censorship, comparatism, religious controversy.
