  • Publication type: Article from a collective work
  • Collective work: Lectures croisées de l’œuvre de Michel Houellebecq
  • Author: Van Der Goot (Jitske)
  • Abstract: The French author Michel Houellebecq and the Dutch author Arnon Grunberg share a poetic of controversy and a devastating cynism. By using irony, satire and exaggerations, the authors tend a magnifying glass to their readers, in which perceives the image of a society in decay, an image that provokes laughter by its grotesque expansion but then also unveils the appalling reality. The authors criticize this reality but do not engage: their nihilistic vision dominates.
