This book is devoted to Victor Hugo’s Théâtre en liberté and explores how these texts written in exile relate to the world of the Second Empire. It brings to light a connective atopy, ubiquity, demystification and critical reflexivity—all common to Hugo’s position—with regard to Théâtre en liberté’s relationship with the contemporary repertoire and its dramaturgical renewals.
