  • Publication type: Article from a collective work
  • Collective work: La Révolution française et le monde d’aujourd’hui. Mythologies contemporaines
  • Author: Takase (Tomoko)
  • Abstract: The Rose of Versailles, a manga by Riyoko Ikeda (1949-), appeared weekly, in the girls’ manga-magazine, Margaret, from 1972 to 1973. The author sought inspiration for this story from Marie Antoinette’s life and character but eventually created a new heroine, Oscar François de Jarjayes, a woman wearing a military uniform and fighting for the lower-class people in the age of the French Revolution. Analyzing the heroine’s character will therefore provide us insight in understanding her internal revolution (her spiritual growth) and the revolutionary rise of the status of pop culture in Japanese society.
