Deist arguments and exegetical analyses have their roots in a long tradition heavily influenced by Grotius, Hobbes and Spinoza, and going from the Hebrew erudition of Surenhusius to the Arminians and neo-Socinians of the end of the 17th century. Which traits of their works can be regarded as specifically deist ? The author puts forward a characteristic conjunction of empirical semantics, epistemology and ars critica.
