This essay explores the coherency of Rousseau’s work as a whole. It makes the case for a constant presence of goodness and the self and, at the same time, a strong negativity associated with the “other” and with “time”. This tension becomes the rhythm of a certain philosophy of happiness, in which language is able to turn shadows into a play of light and dark.
