This issue on the photo-novel was a necessary choice for a journal concerned with the romanesque. It is at once concise and panoramic, in that it analyzes the semiological particularities of the photo-novel with regard to other visual arts as well as its history and associated cultural practices.
Keywords: photo-novel, cultural studies, semiology, cinema, photography, comics.
254Arnaud Bernadet, “The epic tale of a drop of water. Mobile by Michel Butor”
It was in his last novel, Degrés, that Michel Butor expressed the desire for America; but it is in Mobile that this desire materializes formally through using the genre of the study , situated between essay, poem, and novel. Modelled on a catalogue, Mobile recounts an epic tale. Not so much the story of heroic or mythical acts but rather a recital of detail, small things seen and heard, linking the excessiveness of the American continent to the miniscule.
Keywords: Michel Butor, Mobile, America(s), United States, culture, capitalism, consumerism, racism, Nouveau Roman , epic tale, catalogue, detail, phrasing, montage, chorality.
Marianne Albertan-Coppola, “Tempting the poor, a recurring narrative sequence in French novels of the Enlightenment”
Stories of temptation are numerous in eighteenth-century novels portraying the poor: women being tempted to sacrifice their virtue, men to renounce their honesty in exchange for money. An analysis of these codified narrative sequences shows that behind the apparent triumph of virtue hides a strong moral tension, revealing profound social hypocrisy. Through corrosive fictionality, the foundations of the moral system are therefore stripped bare.
Keywords: novel, poverty, virtue, temptation, Enlightenment.
Jacqueline Guittard, Martine Lavaud, “Use of the photo-novel”
The popular and sentimental press market has given the photo-novel so much space to develop that it seems to have taken it hostage. However, whether nostalgia for the great novel makes it look to the past, or a taste for innovative methods leads to experimentation, the photo-novel has been used in far richer ways than we think. Here, eight specialists, creators, and researchers help us understand a genre that makes us rethink our relationship to story.
Keywords: periodical, photography, cinema, cultural history, popular culture, photograph, media archaeology.
Martine Lavaud, “This inept object of desire. Reflections on bovarysme and the photo-novel”
A heterogeneous and popular byproduct of the press, the photo-novel struggled to find its place in relation to the “real” novel, to the great works. Drawing on the case of Hubert Serra and two examples of the photo-novel being transferred to less commonly used mediums or spaces, we examine how the cultural status of the photo-novel, its position with regard to the novel, and finally, its ability to make the reader question their own relationship to photographs, have been rethought.
Keywords: bovarysme, press, photo-novel, sentiment, stereotype.
256Jacqueline Guittard, « Roman-photo.
Jacqueline Guittard, “Photo-novel. Barthes or the charm of the obtuse”
Roland Barthes did not write about the photo-novel. However, his footnote to a page in “Troisième sens. Eisenstein” is frequently cited by writers interested in it. It is necessary to reexplore Barthes ’ œuvre, particularly the works and articles that accord an important place to photography, this lyophilizate of thought, to give back the photo-novel depth and significance. Was Barthes a photo-novel reader?
Keywords: photo-novel, cinema, photogram, vulgarity, emotion.
Jan Baetens, « Le ciné-roman-photo, un roman-photo cinématographique ? »
Jan Baetens, “The ciné-roman-photo, a cinematographic photo-novel?”
The ciné-roman-photo genre has today been forgotten about despite its phenomenal success in the period 1955–1965 and is wrongly considered to be a simple subgenre of the photo-novel. The genesis of the ciné-roman-photo shows it to be inseparable from other genres like the graphic novel or narrative film. We reflect on the criteria allowing us to distinguish between ciné-roman-photo and photo-novel, and on the 257 more photographic than cinematographic horizon of these genres, at the same time similar and distinct.
Keywords: media archaeology, ciné-roman-photo , layout, magazine, photo-novel.
Fabien Gris, “Are photo-novel authors directors?”
What is the auctorial position of those who “direct” photo-novels. By examining, in particular, the technical and aesthetic similarities and differences between the photo-novel and cinema, we ask ourselves what aspects of the director ’ s mindset and work are involved in photo-novelistic creation, including with regard to the recognition and legitimization of the genre. However, despite profound affinities, the mediums appear to be fundamentally distinct.
Keywords: cinema, auctoriality, portrayal, director, medium.
258Danièle Méaux, “A photo-novel documenting professional care work. Les Femmes du lien by Vincent Jarousseau, 2022”
After the success of L ’ Illusion nationale. Following an in-depth analysis of these three albums, this article examines the effects of adopting the photo-novel form for a project of a documentary nature.
Keywords: photo-novel, photography, métiers du lien , care, politics, society.
Magali Nachtergael, “Literary diversion and the photo-novel. From books to the digital sphere, a transmedia reading experience”
The photo-novel is a popular genre, denigrated, parodied, and yet widely diffused since officially appearing in post-war Italy. While the photo-literary récit-photo enjoys academic recognition, the photo-novel has been relegated due to its target readership, women. It has nevertheless inspired a generation of artists who use it to ironically reimagine life ’ s episodes, in books or online.
Keywords: photo-novel, female readership, parodies, contemporary art, digital.
Jacqueline Guittard, « Le (re)nouveau roman-photo ?
Jacqueline Guittard, “The renewal of the photo-novel? Two interviews with Clémentine Mélois, author, and Nathalie Fiszman, publishing director at Seuil”
Is this a publishing “moment”? A more lasting trend? Or a renewal of the photo-novel? In 2021, Éditions du Seuil published Les Six Fonctions du langage , an “all color” photo-novel by Clémentine Mélois, followed in 2022 by Guacamole Vaudou , cowritten by Fabcaro and Éric Judor. The author and publisher explain their approach and their taste for this unacademic genre, which is far from familiar to the famous publishing house.
Keywords: language, society, parody, burlesque, discordance, creation.
Martine Lavaud, “Reinventing the story–on the photo-novel. Interview with Benoît Peeters”
Writer, essayist, researcher, editor, and graphic novel writer (including the Cités obscures created with François Schuiten), Benoît Peeters possesses a rare experience of the relationship between text and image. In the 1980s, he even tried his hand, with Marie-Françoise Plissart, at the photo-novel. Rich in experience of, and reflections on, the illustrated story, in this interview with Martine Lavaud he describes the process of photo-novelistic creation and the genre ’ s potential.
Keywords: graphic novel, edition, Nouveau Roman, photography, photo-novel.
