Following in the footsteps of Michael Sheringham’s work, we recall that archives are nowadays heavily deployed in investigative narratives. But rather than being used only as a tool of attestation, they are also employed for their novelistic magnetism. They generate narrative tension, allowing the bodies of the investigators and the processes of decoding to be dramatized. Investigative narratives bear witness to an expansion of the domain of the archive.
