The relationships between personal and novelistic writings, which have not been extensively studied up to now, nevertheless entail questions of a poetic, aesthetic and existential nature, since we want to account for the narrative dynamics specific to the genres of the memoir, autobiography, and journal. The contributions collected in this volume highlight the romanesque’s modes of appropriation and distancing within writings about the self.
Keywords: autobiographer, Rousseau, Stendhal, critique, René Démoris
286Morgane Kieffer, “The trace and the marbling. For a semiology of contemporary romanesque practices”
This article resumes the discussion on the contemporary romanesque opened by Frank Wagner (Romanesques no. 9). He returns to the definition of the romanesque between literary history and fantasy and proposes a semiology of contemporary romanesque practices, nourished by a sense of the novelistic so present for the collective memory that it does not need full actualization. This romanesque is written between reticence and embrace and is based on a pact of reading based on belief and complicity.
Keywords: contemporary writing, poetics, literary theory, effects of reading, imaginary
Carlo Arcuri, “Epic ethology, romanesque ethics? The grandeur and decadence of the ethos in Georg Lukács’ Theory of the novel”
This article compares the comparative study of the epic form and the novelistic form undertaken by Georg Lukács in The Theory of the novel (1916) with Gilles Deleuze’s distinction between “ethics” and “ethology.” Bordering the ethics of the novel, epic “ethology” would be a peculiarity of a literature able to take into account its own conditions of realization and more broadly its transpersonal dimension at the heart of the aesthetics and the literary theory of the young Lukács.
Keywords: Marxist aesthetics, Spinoza, literary theory, epos, narrator
Myriam Tsimbidy, “The Mémoires of cardinal de Retz, the frontiers of factuality, or, Another paradigm of the romanesque”
The Mémoires of Cardinal de Retz open onto spaces of fiction that, through contamination, make it almost an adventure novel. It will be necessary to grasp some processes of tension between the factuality of the historical testimony, the subjectivity of the introspection, and the invention peculiar to fictions. Transposition, fabulation, simulation of scenarios—there are so many ways for the memorialist to impose, with an unprecedented novelistic factuality, his insolent independence and his power over history.

Adélaïde Cron, “Morality and ethics in the use of the romanesque and antiromanesque. The examples of Sophie de Hanovre and Marie Mancini”
The memoirs of Marie Mancini and Sophie de Hanovre have the peculiarity of being in part what René Démoris calls “novelized” memoirs, while refusing the romanesque of a lady with a suspicious reputation. The article compares the precious romanesque of Mme. Mancini’s authentic memoirs with the more scandalous romanesque of her pseudomemoirs. It also shows how rejecting a certain romanesque means being in conformity with an ethics, in the dual moral and rhetorical sense of the term.
Keywords: ethos, lampoon, picaresque, love, morality, libertinism
Damien Crelier, “Saint-Simon and the question of the romanesque, from ethical disapproval to generic mistrust”
Based on a study of the judgments made by Saint-Simon on the “romanesque” attitude of certain characters in his historical saga, this article supports the rejection of a certain interpretative framework for the Mémoires, which, erroneously in our opinion, has tended to turn the novel into a form capable of accounting for the narrative logic of whole parts of the text. Saint-Simon’s ethical disapproval of the romanesque has thus been linked to a form of generic mistrust.
Keywords: historiography, paradigm, contempt, narrative model, behavior
Stéphanie Adjalian-Champeau, “From the Journal to the Goncourt’s novels, the romanesque in question”
Over the course of more than forty years (1851-1896) the Journal des Goncourt was written. The two brothers used to record many materials which they would then 289use in their novels. This article takes the example of their novel Renée Mauperin to reflect on the links between their Journal and their novels, and to question the future of the romanesque that sprang from this genesis. It takes a particular interest in the tension between the necessity of generalization and the Goncourts’ taste for the singular.
Keywords: generality, singularity, dramatic, family, narrative
Françoise Simonet-Tenant, “From La Vagabonde to La Naissance du jour, the decline of the romanesque in the work of Colette?”
Colette was a novelist of love and couples, themes that are eminently romanesque. She unfailingly transposes an autobiographical substratum. How did she articulate these two regimes of writing (romanesque fiction and an autobiographical impulse) and to what extent is the romanesque at some point in Colette’s career as a writer removed from the narrative? We will answer this question with an analysis of La Vagabonde (1910) and La Naissance du jour (1928).

290Anne Strasser, “The romanesque in a mourning narrative.
Can the romanesque turn up in a mourning narrative? This article analyzes, in light of the romanesque, Une mort très douce, an autobiographical story that Simone de Beauvoir devoted to the death of her mother. This narrative is actually based on a form of narrative tension. In the same way, the author manages to turn her mother into a real character who gains access to a voice that she has always been deprived of. But the analogy with the romanesque stumbles when faced with the moral significance of the story.
Keywords: autobiography, mourning narrative, tension, ambiguity, writing
Sylviane Albertan-Coppola, “Romanesque writing and autobiographical writing in Rousseau’s Confessions”
The Confessions cannot be understood without integrating them into a larger whole that links the autobiographical project with the philosophical inquiry into man that the author pursues from work to work. In attempting to understand “quel enchaînement d’affections secrètes” formed his character, Rousseau links novelistic writing and autobiographical writing to serve his philosophical investigation into man in society.

Catherine Mariette, « Le “premier voyage à Paris”.
Catherine Mariette, “The ‘first trip to Paris’. The romanesque subject in question in Stendhal’s Vie de Henry Brulard”
In Vie de Henry Brulard, the correspondence between author, narrator, and character is clouded. Despite the narrator’s refusal to faire du roman, the truth constantly comes close to fiction in episodes where the romanesque is both thematized and staged. The enunciative device thus blurs the boundaries between novel and autobiography. The narrative of self, enticed by the romanesque and dramatization, also puts them at a distance by inventing the figure of the beyliste, the author’s scriptural double.
Keywords: writing of the intimate, possible, initiation, disenchantment, transition
Without delivering an autobiography in the strict sense of the term, Marguerite Duras feeds her fictional texts with an undeniable autobiographical material and undertakes a fictionalization of lived reality in which romanesque models and topoi abound. Aiming to reorganize the chaos of a life while signifying its irreducible catastrophe, the romanesque underpins a devastated self-narrative: crucible of the writing of the self, it is an attempt to re-enchant one’s life and indicates a fragmentation affecting the subject and its writing.
Keywords: desire, fictionalization, the subject’s writing, love, desire
Laélia Véron, “Pushing the limits of the romanesque. From the autobiographical narrative to the diary in Passion simple and Se perdre by Annie Ernaux”
Although Annie Ernaux’s Passion simple (1992) and Se perdre (2000) seem to belong to an intimate register, their status is, however, quite different: Passion simple is a literary narrative, written after the fact; Se perdre is presented like a newspaper written day by day. This article questions the articulation of these two systems of intimate writing to treat a single novelistic topos and thereby simultaneously redefine and place at a distance the idea of the romanesque and the generic label novel.
