Embodiment, after his death, of the poète maudit, Nerval, during his lifetime, was an example of the difficulties that the hegemony of media culture (that of the major daily press and the artistically fanciful « petite presse ») poses to aspiring writers. The abrupt emergence of this « flow culture » disrupted the literary landscape, before it reorganized itself under the Second Empire – at the moment when Nerval’s work was finally published in volume, bearing witness to this historical in-between.
