Veronica Medda, “‘Each navigation is almost a jump from the cliff of Leucade’. Transversal figures from Dante’s Ulysses in the Dialogue of Christopher Columbus and Pietro Gutierrez”
The XXVI of the Inferno was a fundamental stage in the transformation of the myth of Ulysses. This fate is akin to what awaits Christopher Columbus, the discoverer of a New World. In the Operette morali, Leopardi uses Homeric material – which Dante reinterpreted – to introduce a “caricature” of Ulysses himself in the figure of Columbus as an emblem of the encounter between myth an history of the time, questioning the mythological paradigm but also the modern model.
Keywords: mythology, Dante studies, Giacomo Leopardi, Ulysses, Colombus.
Federico Guariglia, « La Divina Commedia in Galizia.
Federico Guariglia, “The Divine Comedy in Galicia. Manuel Curros Enríquez’s O divino Sainete”
O divino Sainete (1888) by Manuel Curros Enriquez is a poem, in tercets, about the protagonist’s journey to the seat of the Papacy in Rome. The reference of the text is the Divine Comedy, which Curros uses as the model for his own invectives against the Church, Politics and Criticism. The aim of the article is to present the poem and examine the typology of the re-use of Dante’s material with regard to the themes of the Galician poet.
Keywords: Dante, galician poetry, Rexurdimento, Divine Comedy, Curros Enríquez.
Élise Varcin, “Mussolini as Dante’s reader”
According to a common interpretation during the Ventennio, Mussolini embodied the Veltro prophesied by Dante. He himself did not publicly claim this status, but used the Divine Comedy in his own way. He presented it as the “poem of the civil war” to legitimise the violence of the Fascists and refute the thesis, put forward by his opponents, that the violence of the regime would be incompatible with the great cultural production that he hoped for.
Keywords: Benito Mussolini, Dante, violence, Fascism, 20th century ’ s italian culture.
221Salvatore Francesco Lattarulo, « “A te convien tenere altro viaggio”.
Salvatore Francesco Lattarulo,“‘A te convien tenere altro viaggio’. The Dante-function in the infernal routes of Dino Buzzati’s late fiction”
The essay analyzes the “Dante-function” in Dino Buzzati ’ s works. The most evident case of reuse by Buzzati of the Comedy model in a contemporary key is certainly the long story, almost a short novel, Viaggio agli inferni del secolo. New elements of comparison with the first canticle of the medieval poem are highlighted here from this well-known text. Completely new is also the attempt to read from an “infernal” perspective Buzzati’s novel A love affair, the story of a carnal and desperate passion, which can recall the vice of lust, chosen by Dante to represent the first actual encounter with sin.
Keywords: Dino Buzzati, Viaggio agli inferni del secolo, A love affair, Dante-code, lust.
Mots-clés : Cesare Pavese, Augusto Monti, Dante, Mestiere di vivere, La luna e i falò.
222Giuseppe Marrone, “‘Dopo il sogno la passione impressa’. Cesare Pavese’s dantesque itinerary”
Pavese ’ s interest in Dante ’ s work spans the entire life of the author from Santo Stefano Belbo. After his youthful passion, Dante becomes more and more an essential term of comparison for Pavese, and it is no coincidence that he will play a central role in the articulation of Pavese ’ s reflections around the symbol . Lastly, his influence is profoundly reflected in Pavese ’ s last novel, The Moon and the Bonfires, of which he can rightly be considered the “anti-model”.
Keywords: Cesare Pavese, Augusto Monti, Dante, The burning Brand, The Moon and the Bonfires.
Cinzia Gallo, “Vincenzo Consolo reads Dante”
Like Dante, Consolo also investigates the boundary between what can be said and the unspeakable. He does it in various ways, through the use of metaphors, reflecting on the expressive possibilities of the language, and through authorial quotations. Consolo himself declared in an interview: “I believe that Dante runs in our blood, we absorb it; furthermore, it is the source of my penchant for the indirect quotations”. Other aspects of Consol ’ s poetics can be likened to Dante: the importance of literary memory, the distinction between writing and narrating, the significance of some names, the very civil purpose of literature. The article develops through the comparison between Dante ’ s texts, in particular the Comedy, and Consolo’s works.
Keywords: Dante, Consolo, language, commitment, metaphor.
223Fernando Funari, « “Sacrée faim de l’or !”
Fernando Funari, “‘Sacred hunger for gold!’ The Virgilian hypotext in the French translations of Purg. XXII, 40-41”
The tools of corpus linguistics, applied to traductology, may help to systematically determine some trends – evolutionary or involutionary – in the history of translation. These trends are particularly visible in the case of canonical works that have undergone multiple retranslations over the centuries. By means of a case study (the translations of Purg. XXII, 40-41), this study aims to outline the evolution of the meaning of “sacré” (an axiologically ambigous term) and, thus, of the sense of the Sacred in the French language and culture. To this end, we will examine the translator’s reactions to the intertext of Purgatorio (Æn. III 56-57). The oscillation between choices favouring the Virgilian hypotext or the Dantean hypotext (studied in a corpus of 41 versions of the Purgatorio published between 1800 and 2020) will make it possible to formulate the hypothesis of a slow and gradual “re-theologisation” of the Commedia in the French culture.
Keywords: corpus translationology, retranslation, Purgatory, sacred, re-theologization.
Viviana Triscari, « Lucifero, Inferno XXXIV. Genealogie e metamorfosi in tre interpretazioni visuali contemporanee: Martini, Dalì, Incerti »
Viviana Triscari, “Lucifer, Hell XXXIV. Genealogies and metamorphoses in three contemporary visual interpretations: Martini, Dalì, Incerti”
This contribution focuses on the analysis of some twentieth-century figurative reinterpretations of Lucifer, the protagonist of Inferno’s canto XXXIV. Among the many artists who tried their hand at illustrating the Comedy, three were chosen (Alberto Martini, Achille Incerti, Salvador Dalí), as they were considered exemplary of the main possible approaches towards Dante’s text: from the extreme “cannibalistic” appropriation of the work in an autobiographical direction to that of updating its meanings in a historical key.
Keywords: Lucifer, Alberto Martini, Achille Incerti, Salvador Dalí, illustration.
