Thomas Carrier-Lafleur, Guillaume Pinson and Mélodie Simard-Houde, “Introduction. Was It Anything Other Than Making a Work of Art?”
In order to shed light on the novellistic potential of the notion of “bachelors of art”, the introduction places it in a tangle of literary and media representations contemporary of the Recherche, which like it problematizes the questions of cultural heritage and creation. It also attempts to give more depth to the bachelors of art by examining their links to the artistic avant-garde, as well as to a network of meanings linked to politics and botany.
Keywords: futurism, avant-garde, botany, politics, cultural heritage, media discourse, creation.
Dominique Pety, “Proust and the Poetics of Collection. The Shadow of the Goncourt”
Proust confronts the figure of the collector-writer, and particularly that of the Goncourt brothers, realistic novelists, historians and diarists, in order to question historical erudition and its relationship to time, or the process of observation and its ontological stakes. The Goncourt certainly appear as counter-models, but they also help Proust to think of the collection as an aesthetic structure, essential to the deployment of reminiscence, and to the unitary composition of the work.
Keywords: Goncourt, collection, collector, bibliophily, history, japanism, fashion, dress.
Yuri Cerqueira dos Anjos, “Writing on the Threshold of Art. The Press between Vocation and Failure”
In À la Recherche du temps perdu, the notion of vocation is always haunted by the possibility of failure, producing a constant tension between the fate of the writer and that of the “bachelor of art”. The press plays an important role in this tension, being present at several moments of the hero-narrator’s writer trajectory. This article analyzes how the press helps to tell the story of a talent searching for its realization and to construct the paradoxes and complexities of vocation in Proust’s work.
Keywords: press, vocation, writing, literature, bachelor of art.
Mathilde Bertrand, “‘Clothed by You in the Bridal Gown’, the Alliance of the artist and the amateur in the Life and Work of Marcel Proust”
Proust reproaches Balzac for confusing life and literature and for equating a beautiful marriage with a great book, social success with literary success. If he himself is not a “bachelor of art”, one of those “unwilling and sterile amateurs” that he denounces, it is probably because he too has entered into an alliance: À la recherche du temps perdu is born of the fruitful union of an artist and an amateur, an aristocrat and a commoner, a poet and a novelist.
Keywords: Montesquiou, amateur, dilettante, roman à clé, correspondence, aristocracy, femininity, poetry.
Mireille Naturel, « Le célibataire de l’art proustien. Un héritage flaubertien ? »
Mireille Naturel, “The Proustian Bachelor of Art. A Flaubertian Legacy?”
The bachelor is a social figure and a fictional character of the 19th century. Flaubert, in his Dictionnaire des idées reçues, defines it according to two criteria, sterility 274and ageing, which Proust takes up again by applying them to the “bachelors of art”. A genetic approach makes it possible to follow the evolution of the latter group from “Un amour de Swann”, where they embody a certain reception of music, to Le Temps retrouvé, where they participate in aesthetic reflection.
Keywords: L’Éducation sentimentale, “Un amour de Swann”, painting, music, society, sterility, aesthetics, genetic study.
Joël Fusco, “Dandies, Fin-de-siècle Bachelors of Art in À la recherche du temps perdu”
In À la recherche du temps perdu, beaux and aesthetes abound; amongst them, the dandies stand out. Dandyism in Proust’s work has been abundantly commented, yet some grey areas remain. The dandy figure, highly meaningful, contributes to fuel the dramatic dynamics of the novel. The characters of Charlus and Saint-Loup represent the pinnacle, each in his own way, of French dandyism. They constantly enrich the aesthetic reflection of the character-narrator, as deterrents to his calling as a writer.
Keywords: dandy, fin-de-siècle aesthetics, dilettantism, elegance, aristocracy, art.
Rémi Marcoux, “Swann as a Cicerone, an Art of Travel?”
This article approaches the matter of the cicerone side of Charles Swann: more than a bachelor of art, this character knows, like a writer, how to transmit an interest for what he talks about while communicating his vision. His use of erudition, however, set his discourses apart from those of the great creative geniuses. In Proust’s universe, the functions of artist and cicerone are pretty close, and the latter group can, when acting as professors of beauty, contribute to great art.
Keywords: Charles Swann, cicerone, guided tour, travel in Italy, erudition, real art, professor of beauty, John Ruskin, literary creation.
Anne Élaine Cliche, “Exaltation and Its Vicissitudes. Bloch in the Mirror of Creation”
The exaltation experienced by the narrator and Bloch in their youth has a different literary destiny for each of them, dependent on a certain idea of creation. For the narrator, the work requires a withdrawal into oneself in the name of redemption, whose links with Jewish mysticism can be brought to light. Bloch, a talented author, a figure of Jewishness that cannot be assimilated by anti-Semites, appears as the representative of exaltation placed at the service of “false vocations”.
Keywords: exaltation, Bloch, anti-Semitism, creation, redemption, cabal.
276Yves-Michel Ergal, « Le “Bravo, bravo” »
Yves-Michel Ergal, “The ‘Bravo, bravo’”
After detaching himself from the “Ruskinian idolatry”, the novelist Marcel Proust stages, in parallel with “the inverted”, a major archetype: the “bachelor of art”. Over years of writing, the novel deepens, adding to the literary theory put in place by means of characters such as Bloch, who becomes a double of the narrator in Le Temps retrouvé.
Keywords: novel, literary theory, narrator, bachelors of art, Bloch.
How Marcel Proust Will Not Become a Bachelor of Art”
What is the relationship between Proust’s personal journey as a writer and his bachelor of art characters in the Recherche? A number of little-known documents may help to shed some light on this, including a note that plans to retitle Les Plaisirs et les Jours, “Premières années dans la Société et dans la Solitude” and the Recherche, “Retour à la Solitude”. The question arises as to how to delineate the period devoted to the bachelor of art in Proust’s work and the autobiographical value of his novel.
Keywords: autobiography, fictional autobiography, author’s intentions, Les Plaisirs et les Jours, vocation, novel.
