Rachid Mimouni denies two beliefs which were widespread in Algeria at the time he was writing and which are the foundations of nationalism, the only ideology in force among the people then. One of the two supports the fact that the fight for independence was led by peasants of exemplary courage. The other proclaims the incorruptible virtue of N.L.F. fighters and of their leaders who became the country’s leaders in 1962. Mimouni questions these beliefs through humour and farce, while describing a country sinking into tragedy.
