The present article offers a terminological update on the question of the “fragment” raised in the 1980s as a way of classifying the Illuminations generically. The argument here holds that such a classification is doubly problematic: on the one hand, Rimbaud and Verlaine’s use of the term is a widely attested one; considered poetically and historically, on the other hand, the term “fragment” designates a critical context whose specificity it is crucial to interrogate and grasp.
