In July 1873, Rimbaud first became a victim and then a defender of Verlaine. His act of withdrawal, a genuine plea for the imprisoned poet, marked a significant procedural turning point in the Brussels case. When questioned as a witness by the Brussels judges, the investigating judge t’Serstevens mentioned Rimbaud's “pity”. Without it, this case might have potentially been referred to a jury.
