According to André Malraux, the evolution of art consists of continuities and ruptures. As early as 1918, Oswald Spengler emphasized rupture as an element in the history of civilizations and cultures (The Decline of the West). This article identifies and defines certain continuities and ruptures in Malraux’s writings on art. It concludes that the sense of continuity prevails over the sense of rupture, since the spirit of artists inspires them to participate in a communion outside of time.
