Sylvie Loignon, « Avant-propos »
Sylvie Loignon, “Foreword”
This present book wish to highlight the recent and innovative works of Simona Crippa on myth in Duras ’ production. Indeed, as the first part of this collective ’ s director, she invites researchers and writers to think on this prolific subject.
Keywords: myth, researchers, writers, mythopoetic, mythography.
Simona Crippa, « Introduction »
Simona Crippa, “Introduction”
If Duras rewrites some of the most famous myths, she writes like a mythopoet, listening to the Rumour as an inexhaustible source of stories and a reservoir of collective memory. The Rumour is indeed a narrative epiphany; the voices establish the polyphony of Duras ’ narratives, they convey stories and change the author into an echo chamber, dealing with hybris.
Keywords: mythopoetics, mythography, creation, character, rumor, memory, immemorial.
Mireille Calle-Gruber, “Duras by Duras, the Myth”
This text suggests that the real myth, which transcends all mythical characters, is the name Duras. She transcends myth, being both ravished and emptied of heroic substance, her everyday, hyperbolic writing being the terrain for it. Duras ’ s myth is born of the breathing uncertainty of her writing, which doesn ’ t know what book means. The author embodies an indecisive and universal history, creating a literary myth that transcends all memory.
Keywords: Duras name, myth, writing, everyday writing, book, memory.
Johan Faerber,“Stories of Violence. Duras, a Mythographer of Genders and Classes”
As a major political tool, Durasian mythography fulfils the opposite role of ancient myth: it rediscovers history beneath nature, working to denaturalize it, by relying exclusively on news items. Duras ’ s mythography thus has a dual purpose: it sheds light on relations of gendered domination by highlighting the feminicidal power of men. It also sheds light on material relations by highlighting the sociocidal power of class struggle. Through myth, Duras gives Marxism a cosmic power.
Keywords: marxism, myth, mythography, sociocide, feminicide, news item.
Anne Brancky, “The Prison Myth in Duras”
When Duras turns to the prison system, which she calls “the penitentiary world, the shadow of our world”, she relies on the figure of the myth to bring these invisible spaces to life. In two mediated dialogues, Duras positions herself as an intermediary between the French public and the penitentiary in order to condemn the human-made justice system and to emphasize the creative potential of the shadow.
Keywords: prison system, myth, justice, creative potential, visible/invisible.
Savannah Kocevar, “The ‘dark blood’ of the Wild Girl. Sacrificial Matricide and Creative Process in Marguerite Duras’ Indochinese Cycle”
The texts of the Indochinese cycle are anchored in a period of change characterized by the same scenario: an aged and weakened mother is dying, while a young girl aspires to leave childhood to gain independence. Reactualizing a mythical way of thinking, the stories of this cycle show how the fabrication of both feminine identities (i.e., the 270 so-called “physiological” states and the cultural status given to the body) and scriptural identities correlate with the sacrificial murder of the mother.
Keywords: ethnocriticism, body, look, Indochinese cycle, becoming a writer, ritual-narrative homology, blood, ink, cynegetics.
Alexis Weinberg, “Duras and the Sacredness of Writing. Between Mythical Impulse and Mystical Dereliction”
The work of Marguerite Duras plays on the enantiosemia of the term “sacred”. It stems from a powerful mythopoetic impulse and a mysticism of writing marked by dereliction. Durassian writing forges myths, but also digs them up to expose the Real: the two gestures support each other. Thus the “too late” of the incipit of L’Amant can be interpreted as a condemnation by fate or the “death drive”, but also and above all as the condition of the sacredness of writing.
Keywords: writing, mythology, mysticism, sacred, death drive, dereliction.
271Luciene Guimarães de Oliveira, “Les Mains négatives,Cosmogony, Creation and Representation”
Creation and cosmogony come together in the genesis of the text and film Les Mains négatives. The imprint of negative hands also evokes the genesis of art, writing and images, whose raw material is light. In terms of representation, these hands are a pretext for revealing Duras’s intermedial approach to creation, from which we will highlight the relationships between creation and cosmogony, light and image, movement and writing.
Keywords: creation, cosmogony, cinema, image, genesis of art, writing.
Christophe Meurée, “‘All the Sleeping Beauties were Waiting for Him’. The Work of Marguerite Duras as ‘Becoming-a-Fairy Tale’”
From her earliest works, Marguerite Duras drew inspiration from the European tradition of fairy tales, borrowing from them their power to enchant, to plunge us into the wonder of childhood. From 1980 onwards, and particularly in La Pluie d’été and L’Été 80, this hitherto implicit use became explicit, though the novelist was careful to neutralise the moralising dimension that is usually attributed to fairy tales.
Keywords: fairy tales, intertextuality, childhood, forrest, morality, enchantment.
272Emmanuel Lascoux, “Speed behind the Wheel”
From the myth of Duras and her rides in a 4L to her legendary writings.
Keywords: myth, walks, readings, legend-writing, legacy.
Marie Cosnay, “From Odd to Odd”
Questioning the “breach of words” at the heart of The Rapture Lol V. Stein, that myth of the world’s beginnings that speaks like “rumor” but constantly speaks of absence.
Keywords: world ’ s gap, myth, rumor, absence, rapt.
Sylvie Loignon, « Introduction »
Sylvie Loignon, “Introduction”
Despite the character ’ s boredom and inertia, Les Petits Chevaux de Tarquinia is a profuse novel, thanks to its tone’s variations, from tragic to comical and ironic, its autobiographical dimension, its imagination which will nourish Duras’ later works, and the way it makes us think on desire, love and death.
Keywords: boredom, death, tragic, comical, ironic, desire, love, imagination.
Marie-Hélène Boblet, “Boredom in Les Petits Chevaux de Tarquinia”
The characters in Duras ’ novel Les Petits Chevaux de Tarquinia do nothing but wait for the rain to come in an agonizing and torrid landscape. They experiment either boredom (Ludi’s group) or anguish (Sara). Some look for an efficient entertainment to overcome the fear of loneliness while Sara abysses in “the fear of breakdown” (Winnicott) caused by our weak and mortal condition (Pascal).
Keywords: boredom, anguish, entertainment, confinement, death, loneliness.
Cécile Hanania, “A Tomb of the Revolution”
Despite the holidays and the final word of the text: “hope”, Les Petits Chevaux de Tarquinia conveys a dissatisfaction of the author and is part of a broader context of political disenchantment. These disillusionments contaminate the structure and temporality of the novel, which plays and ironizes on the polysemic notion of “revolution”. It is through this concept, inseparable from the communist perspective of the characters, that the novel is analysed.
Keywords: revolution, future, history, communism, marxism, vanity, rotation, inertia.
Carine Capone, “From Etruscan Tombs to the Literary Tomb”
In the novel Les Petits Chevaux de Tarquinia is the Etruscan necropolis mentioned in the title only to false lead? The characters plan to go there towards the very end of the novel which takes place elsewhere, in Liguria. This article proposes to consider the novel as a literary tomb for the anonymous deaths of the war as much as for those who touched Marguerite Duras more intimately, namely her stillborn son and her brother.
Keywords: death, necropolis, literary tomb, tribute, war, autobiography, child, silence.
Robert Harvey, “Bitter Campari”
To what extent does the bitter element in the taste of the vacationers ’ favourite drink correspond to variations in the amorous relationships that course among them? This is the question explored in the pages that follow – with the help first of Canadian poet-philosopher, Anne Carson, then with that of a nearly silent intradiegetic Pythia.
Keywords: bitterness, love, eros, bitter campari, motherhood, triangulation.
Midori Ogawa, “Portrait of a Mute Woman”
The characters spend their holidays in an Italian resort. The ideal place lends itself to their game, the holiday time is spent in conversation with friends. But up close, this picture turns out to be not without its rough edges, the carefree attitude soon turns into deadly, almost existential boredom. This boredom is highlighted by two events that the characters, especially Sara, have to face. The art of the novel is to paint the landscape of the heart as vibrations of the sensitive world.
Keywords: boredom, old age, death, child, motherhood, love, silence.
Laëtitia Deleuze, “Writing ‘the Aftermath of Events’. The Silent Event of Bodies, Death and Desire in Marguerite Duras’Les Petits Chevaux de Tarquinia”
This article analyzes the writing of the “aftermath of events” in Marguerite Duras ’ novel Les Petits Chevaux de Tarquinia. Between disappearance and appearance, fragments of bodies and writing, death and desire, Durasian writing 276invites us to experience absence and lack in order to express “the silent collapse of the world”.
Keywords: event, disappearance, appearance, death, desire, silence, look, body, lack.
Philippe Pansiot, « Garder/changer.
Philippe Pansiot, “Keeping/Changing. An Existential Questioning”
This novel shows exemplarily the use that can be made of the rich polysemy of two reverse non-literary concepts: keeping and changing. Surveillance, if not playful, is depicted here in its flawed aspect, questioning the notion of distraction. From oneself to others, to the collective, the novel stages the mourning of an impossible Totality that unites keeping and changing, along with ways of conjugating existence and change – of life, opinions, desires, lovers, places, and the world.
Keywords: look, totality, to change, to keep, existence, entertainment, immobility, movement.
