Arthur Rimbaud put it most clearly in his letter of May 15, 1871: “On n’a jamais bien jugé le romantisme ; qui l’aurait jugé ? les critiques !! Les romantiques, qui prouvent si bien que la chanson est si peu souvent l’œuvre, c’est-à-dire la pensée chantée et comprise du chanteur ? ”. In other words, the poets considered Romantic never really understood true Romanticism ; he, on the other hand, found the secret, demonstrated it in this manifesto letter and set out to apply it in his work. This article examines Rimbaud’s radical romanticism and its aesthetic implications, focusing on Une saison en enfer.
