In 1591, Robert Greene wrote A Notable Discovery of Cozenage to denounce the ploys of the “cony-catchers” working in London. The tone is both moralising and exhilarating: while the author warns his fellow citizens, he also entertains them, ensnaring them in his storytelling tricks.
