From one edition of Ronsard's Hymnes to the next, the “sentences” marked with inverted commas are part of a more coherent choice (general and autonomous statements). They concentrate stylistic effects (notably oratorical “numbers”); in the discourse or narrative, they have a logical or emotional effect (gravity), marking a conclusion or a transition; they are used paradoxically, not only to confirm the point, but also to introduce an objection.
