Ronsard thought a great deal about the power of the image. His work has sometimes been seen as the construction of a verbal monument or palace, and critics have not failed to underline how much Ronsard’s poems owe to images. However, one source of inspiration has been somewhat overlooked: emblem books. Here we identify several emblems taken from Alciat and in particular the Héctomgraphie which have been the subject of poetic rewritings in Ronsard’s texts.
