This article examines the strategies that Rabelais’s early translators (Johann Fischart, Thomas Urquhart, Pierre Motteux, and Nicolaas Jarichides Wieringa) employed to confront or circumvent lexical difficulties in Rabelais’s botany. To this end, the article focuses on three episodes from Rabelais: the torcheculs episode (G, XIII), the Pantagruelion episode (TL, l), and the episode with the Fredons Brothers (CL, XXVIII: the enumeration of aphrodisiac plants).
