In Jugement et observations (1697), Jean Bernier was the first to attribute the full Greek motto ΤΥΧΗ ΑΓΑΘΗ ΞΥΝ ΘΕΩ (Good Fortune with God) to Rabelais. Bernier transcribed the saying incorrectly, equating it to the Latin tempore et loco prelibatis (in due time and place), which is spoken by Friar John in chapter LII of Gargantua. While the Greek motto is unquestionably authentic, the Latin one would appear more doubtful in view of the Latin gloss provided by Jean Bernier.
