Acidity, observed in its literary manifestations, can be approached in a two-fold manner : an attempt at corrosion (a “vitriolic effect” produced by the writer) which is linked to a joyful reception (a “citrus effect” for the reader). Four general propositions demonstrate this, with examples taken from Baudelaire and Barbey d’Aurevilly.
