Madame Mallarmé figures in three poems. “Brise marine” associates the young woman with two other images which symbolically represent a straight-forward style of writing. In “Don du poème” Marie is depicted in a negative light. In fact Mallarmé distances himself not from his wife but from his earlier poetic style which he describes as a “horrible birth”. “Éventail de Madame Mallarmé” can be read as a more provocative piece if we interpret it as contrasting ways of fanning oneself, one of which evokes prose and the other poetry.
