This article considers the translations of Poe’s poetry and their illustration by Manet in an edition overseen by Mallarmé. It seeks to illuminate the role of the image in this text in which the English version, the French translation, and the illustrations rub shoulders with each other. The latter are in reality a second sort of translation, from poem to image, and are also a spur to Mallarmé’s fundamental reflections on the role of the author in creation.
