Ann Rule was not a fictional detective, but a novelist. While volunteering in social work, she met Ted Bundy, who would later turn out to be a serial killer. When he was found out in 1978, she de-cided to write a novel about him, entitled The Stranger Beside Me, which she published in 1980. This paper will examine the hybrid genre that she uses, midway between a news report and a novel.
