The happiness of animals is a literary motif one finds throughout a large body of texts that reveal two modes of writing about animal emotions : behavioral empathy and anthropomorphism. Between them, they make it possible to amass rigorous zoological knowledge. This motif plays a narrative and diegetic role and investigates the limits of animals’ subjectivity. Ultimately it presents the relation to the world through an inner life as a fundamental dimension of animal existence.
