The Musicalists, an association of artists founded in 1932 under the banner of music, developed a curvilinear abstract style, some of whom used serpentine line in their painting, sculpture, and film. Examined through the works of Louise Janin, Étienne Béothy and Henry Valensi, while also reflecting their personal conception of abstraction and beauty, in resonance with Hogarth’s treatise, this line corresponds to an aesthetic of suggestion.
