Karine Espineira, Maud-Yeuse Thomas, “Trans bodies in television series”
We asked the question “What is a trans body?” using an approach based on comparative anthropology and multi-disciplinary perspectives. Cultural productions that portray trans people are subject to debate concerning “transface” and “passing.” These issues of representation give rise to questions: How are the bodies of trans people conceived? How are they conceived and constructed in order to be represented, to “pass for trans” when “it ’ s not obvious” at first?
Keywords: transgender bodies, transface, passing, issues of representation, series.
Sarah Sepulchre, “Ambivalent and contrasting portrayals of trans people in Butterfly, First Day, Louis(e), and Transparent”
Following the work of Karine Espineira and Maud-Yeuse Thomas, this article examines the representation of trans people in four television series: Butterfly , First Day , Louis(e) , and Transparent . The analysis shows that the portrayals remain stereotypical (notably through the use of prosthetics and certain elements of language) and influenced by the cis gaze (Fabre). Nevertheless, it appears that the signs sometimes undermine the gender system. These are, however, only micro-disruptions.
Keywords: television series, transidentity, representation, stereotypes, cis gaze.
Coraline Refort, “The question of cross-gender behavior in Les résultats du féminisme (1906) by Alice Guy”
In this article, the author analyzes the futuristic film Les résultats du féminisme , directed by Alice Guy in 1906, through the prism of the concept of cross-gender behavior. In the work, the world ’ s first female film director shows us a projection of a future world in which the gender roles have been reversed, where feminism has triumphed. The film ’ s power lies in the way in which it comically highlights sexual inequality, which could go unnoticed by her contemporaries.
Keywords: Alice Guy, gender studies, silent film, history of cinema, visual culture.
Laurence Perron, “For a prosthetic cinema. Genre films and genre/gender as citational practice”
Titane (Julia Ducournau) and Les garçons sauvages (Bertrand Mandico) examine the construction of gender through processes of transhuman transformation. In this article, Laurence Perron explores the way in which prosthetics are used in these films, without necessarily developing a cinematographic commentary on transidentity, to produce a “trans vision” of cinema. She therefore looks at the presence of prosthetics in the two films and their prosthetic imaginary to demonstrate how a prosthetic imaginary of filmmaking practices has developed in response to these images of prosthetics.
Keywords: prosthetic, queering, transhuman, transidentity, cinema.
276Albain Le Garroy, “To be a trans creole cyborg in Night City. Reflections on identity in the video game Cyberpunk 2077”
This article on the video game Cyberpunk 2077 concerns the cyborg bodies of players ’ characters and those of non-players. Through them, the choices the diegetic universe allows make up a database that renders all ideas of corporal unity obsolete.
Keywords: cyborg, cyberpunk, racism, sexism, science-fiction.
Quentin Petit Dit Duhal, “The body brought into play. Mutation as interactive corporal experimentation”
With Expérimentale mise en jeu (2015), ORLAN subverts video game codes and immerses the public in a virtual space. In it they can incarnate a cyborg avatar in the artist ’ s image, whose objective is to rebuild the world and reconstruct their own body. In this way, the video game presents a fictional story that expresses metamorphosis and the quest for identity: In what way is the transformation of the real induced by the video game ’ s narrative form used to give depth to the metamorphosis of ORLAN ’ s body?
Keywords: metamorphosis, video game, virtual, cyborg, feminism, ORLAN.
Occitane Lacurie, “Disfiguring otherness and representing alienation. Trans reappropriation of bodies in the horror genre”
The theme of transgressing gender norms in a horror context runs from nineteenth-century gothic literature through to horror films at the end of the twentieth century. Used both to express a reactionary backlash and create a counter-culture imaginary through which to critique heteronormative norms, these artistic productions, as well as the bodies and characters that populate them, necessitate a dialectic analysis of the trans critiques and reappropriations they are subject to.
Keywords: bodies, corporeality, horror films, gothic, dysphoria, visual culture, Susan Stryker, Jane Schoenbrun.
Marion Cazaux, “Tools for transcending gender”
The practice of drag enables us to question our approach to gender as a social construction and image. Wanting to go beyond expected representations, certain artists use their attributes to make several genders coexist simultaneously, or, on the contrary, to subvert them to the point of making them disappear. From club kids to drag queers and genderfuck via horror, artists draw on popular culture to call for a blurring of identities that has become a creative source.
Keywords: performance, photography, drag, cross-gender practices, queer.
Marie-Laure Delaporte, “To be two, to be many in this body. Representation and incarnation of transition”
For several years, moving images have become the favored “places” for representing and incarnating questions linked to the visual perception of bodies in transition. The fluidity of on-screen images convey the fluidity of queer identities through the transformation of bodies. Research in this field notably features in the work of Cabello/Carceller, Pauline Boudry, and Renate Lorenz, as well as Tayeba Begum Lipi.
Keywords: queer, identity, transformation, body, double.
Societal and warrior transfigurations in James Cameron’s Terminatorfilms”
The two Terminator films directed by James Cameron can be seen as standard action films: a woman must be saved from male warriors at all costs. However, these stories are also developed through a commentary on the increasing strength of the female 279 character. Through speech and the visual representation of social and biological bodies, cliches from the era begin, at least partly, to evolve: masculine muscles and totemic firearms take second place to the revelation of the figure of the female fighter.
Keywords: Terminator , body, muscles, women, social, weapon.
Louise Francezon, “Decomposition and recomposition of the body of the female aviator. An analysis of (de)gendered bodies in French newsreels from the 1930s”
In the interwar period, several female aviators attracted attention from the French media as exceptional figures who had freed themselves from gender conventions. This article examines the production of gendered discourse in the Pathé and Gaumont newsreels of the 1930s. The objective is to understand the cinematographic techniques used to construct and deconstruct these pilots ’ gender. It is therefore a question of observing how these female aviators ’ bodies became a space in which gender was performed, represented, and recomposed in order to (re)create a modern image of the female pilot.
Keywords: gender, newsreels, female aviator, representation, visual culture.
Jessica Ragazzini, “Between fashion, body, and virtual. The revolution of Nick Knight”
This article explores the production of the fashion photographer Nick Knight and specifically his website SHOWstudio.com. In a utopia of democratized fashion images, evolving through the digital screen in total transparency, SHOWstudio allows us to envisage the body being perpetually transformed, malleable like clay and also capable of merging with the very matter of the digital medium, in a perspective comparable to that of posthumanism.
Keywords: fashion, screen, modified bodies, internet, posthumanism.
Maxime Savoie, “Representation of transidentity in the films of David Cronenberg”
David Cronenberg ’ s films show characters whose corporal transformations confront them with their internal psyche and a redefinition of their perception and identity. Their unconventional personal journeys echo the many possible experiences of transidentity and resonate with transgender and queer people. His films look at the social impact that redefining bodies and humanity represents, beyond any commonly accepted norms.
Keywords: body horror, transidentity, Cronenberg, queer, body.
281Christophe Becker, « The Girl and the Robot.
Christophe Becker, “The Girl and the Robot. Proto-gynoids, sexbots, fembots, gynoids, portrait of the robot-female as the ‘Dutch wife’”
Although robots appeared very early on in literature or on the screen, they are regularly associated with the idea of a threat that is amplified by their inhumanity. The question becomes still more problematic with the emergence of robots with an exclusively feminine appearance. Here the particularities of the robot-female character are examined while outlining the different discourses that accompanied it according to the era, the politics of the screen writers, or the doxa of the time.
Keywords: woman, android, sexuality, patriarchy, science-fiction.
282Guillaume Baychelier, “Stories of body liquidation in video game horror. Incarnation and transmigration”
This study examines the paradox inherent in the materialist logic of horror video games aiming to render the materiality of simulated bodies perceptible. From here, it considers how certain video games belonging to the same genre– Soma (2015), Observer (2017) Transference (2018), Transient (2020)–turn this around and use science-fiction contexts to make the erasure of the body a horror theme from a perspective of issues specific to transhumanism.
Keywords: transmigration, transhumanism, cybernetics, video game, horror.
