In 1925, Paul Morand witnessed the strike that paralysed Hong Kong and which served as the backdrop to Malraux's novel Les Conquérants. The publication of Morand’s tale Bouddha vivant in 1927 was inspired by culturalist views and the strong personality of the author of La Tentation de l'Occident (1926). Malraux wrote an eloquent account of Morand’s novel. Morand returned this favour in his review of Les Conquérants in 1929. This article examines the sources and the implications of this biographical, intellectual and literary interaction.
