Mário de Andrade (1893-1945), young poet, critic, and leader of the modernist movement in São Paulo was one of the first to welcome Cendrars to Brazil in 1924 with this article. After reviewing Cendrars’ work, which he read and studied passionately, the author examines the play of European influences in Brazil at the time, and in a surge of national pride, comes to identify Cendrars’ contribution, paradoxically emancipatory, with his own poetic and intellectual approach.
