In Corneille’s Le Menteur, a young man who wants to enter high society commits faux pas by lying. In La Suite du Menteur, this same young man learns the art of true-lying and behaving as an honest man. This comedy provides key elements for a theory of legislation that takes into account the political and rhetorical nature of the legislative process. It educates us about the cultural and contextual elements that have informed theories of the rule of law.
