Benjamin Constant de Rebecque (Lausanne, 1767–Paris, 1830), an Enlightenment philosopher from French-speaking Switzerland, had a keen interest in French politics and affairs. From the era when the great codifications—particularly penal ones—were drafted, Benjamin Constant developed his theory for good justice and against judicial error. In 1818, he was involved in the defense of two people sentenced to death (the Regnault and Lainé affairs).
