Political television series dramatize the process of political actors learning their role, individually and, through their entourage, collectively. They do so by focusing on cases in which a new entrant reaches high office without having been elected (The Crown, Designated Survivor). Fiction conceives of the learning of the role as a number of trials that all political actors undergo, but in which they can fail, either because they are “not cut out for the role” or because they are prevented from succeeding by external factors.
