This article examines the reasons that led Gérard de Nerval to choose the term pehlvi ferouer, the guardian angel of Mazdeism, as the only name likely to designate the figure of the double in his work. The ambivalence of the Nervalian double, whose paradoxical function is to forbid incest while perpetuating it, can be interpreted through an erudite knowledge of such an orientalist motif.
