This paper analyses the censorial effects that can be attributed to a critical intention in the Histoire de l’Académie Royale des Sciences by Fontenelle. These effects which remain necessarily hypothetical can be identified more easily in the scientists’ “Éloges”. We also show how these censorial practices did have various forms that eventually came from institutional as well as from scientific or political grounds.
