Yann Bernal, “Corbière, misprints and printing. Teratology of the original edition of Les Amours jaunes”
This article tries to show how the author assumes the misprints, that flourish in Les Amours jaunes with no comparison with the poetical production of theses times nor the other works by Alcan-Lévy ’ s printing house, as tricky and fully consubstantial with his poetics, thus he gives jokingly birth to the voluntary misprint as a new literary figure. Discovering new hints, both biographical and pihlological, enables to establish that Corbière did look after the printing of his book of poems. The decisive hint lies in the identification of a dedicatee, who was unknown since his discovering in 1970: Alcan-Lévy ’ s workshop chief: Saint-Léger.
Keywords: Les Amours jaunes , 1873, misprint, original edition, Alcan-Lévy, Saint-Léger, print, typography.
The logic of a poet’’
This paper gives a reading of Les Amours jaunes with respect to the poet ’ s relationship with himself and with poetic tradition. We underline the elasticity and complexity of the relationship, which we should diferenciate from other contemporary artistic gestures. Regarding to poetic forms, genres, figures and themes, something of the past « stays », and may even be reinvigorated, in Les Amours jaunes, precisely thourgh the writing of a critical poetry.
Keywords: Les Amours jaunes , title, modernity, literary tradition.
Laurent Lescane, « Comment peut-on publier Corbière ?
Laurent Lescane, ‘‘How to publish Corbière? From manuscript to textual image’’.
The history of publishing shows a real incompatibility between publishers ’ standards and writers ’ innovations. To Corbière, publishing Les Amours Jaunes inevitably meant an impoverishment of his writing and of its visual dimension in particular. 417 This article aims to show that Corbière, far from giving his specificity up, resorted to different editing strategies so that his 1873 edition would keep its original visual aspect.
Keywords: editing, publishing, textual image, textual materiality, pictoriality.
Charlène Clonts, ‘‘Reported Speech and Iconic Apparatus in Les Amours jaunes’’
In Tristan Corbière ’ s book of poetry Les Amours jaunes , the materiality of the text both divides and connects, thus highlighting an iconic apparatus. Those mechanisms operate in the re-enunciation of reported speeches, that can be studied as visible and legible texts. The remediatisation of discourse is tangible in the quotes and in the collages from various advertisements. It indicates poetical practices linked to industrial and urban disruptions.
Keywords: materiality, enunciation, reported speech, iconic mechanism, collage, advertisement, industrialisation.
418Yann Mortelette, “The pre-decadentism of Les Amours jaunes”
Was Corbière the predecessor of the fin-de-siècle Decadents? Rediscovered by Verlaine, Huysmans and Laforgue in the 1880s, his only collection was then interpreted as a potentially decadent work. This reading of Les Amours jaunes deserves to be analysed and compared with the stylistic, poetic and thematic elements that the history of literature has retained as characteristics of the Decadent movement. If the pre-decadentism of Les Amours jaunes contributes to their modernity, it is however far from being limited to it.
Keywords: decadentism, reception, stylistics, poetics, thematic.
Esther Pinon, ‘‘Portrait of Corbière enhomme qui rit. Reading of‘Femme’’’
The poem ‘‘ Femme ’’ , in Les Amours jaunes , can be read as a rewriting of an episode from Hugo ’ s L ’ Homme qui rit . This rewriting gives Corbière an opportunity to explore not only bitter and jarring feelings, but also the everlasting traces the literary past has left on his writing. Though unique because of its partly cryptic intertext, it offers an indicative sample of Corbière ’ s complex relationship with romanticism, whose legacy is literally incorporated in his poetry.
Keywords: Tristan Corbière, intertext, romanticism, Victor Hugo, rewriting.
Julien Vignères, “‘An iron secret door, full of nails, armed with bolts… and wide open.’Casino des Trépassés by Tristan Corbière, architecture of a psychic and poetic place.”
Casino des Trépassés has a special place in Tristan Corbière ’ s work. The poet ’ s first successful prose text, this piece of bravery staggers as much by the learned and imposing architecture of the text itself as by that of this casino the poet tells tales about. A detectable psychic material in the dazzling flashes of images that saturate the description is added to the language material. This text is a dizzying, both poetic and mental, bastion within which an ego is inscribed, tries to find itself and spreads out itself in search of an sanctuary. This article tends to highlight the mysteries of this construction.
Keywords: Prose, textual architecture, images, soma, psyche.
Adolphe Maillot, ‘“Plangoraison for two pigs. A Reading of ‘À un Juvénal de lait’”
Corbière ’ s poetry stands out as a pose which is presented as natural by the use of several literary devices. This approach is particularly noticeable in « À un Juvénal de lait » where one can hear the confrontation of two a priori contradictory voices, while seeing two symbolically opposed colours intermingle. Between lyricism and irony, 420 between the green paradise of childhood love and the yellow bile of the enraged colourist, how to find one ’ s way? If Corbière restlessly poses with his disenchanted verses and his multiplied figures, it would be doubtlessly to plangorer with impunity.
Keywords: irony, lyricism, pose, parody, satire, déchant .
Steve Murphy, “Notes on some of the motivations of the first known review of Les Amours jaunes”
On the 1st October 1873, a review article links Les Amours jaunes with the Romanticism of 1830 and with Realism. With a republican perspective that the poet of « La Pastorale de Conlie » would have rejected, the author praises « all revolt, even when it fails », taking aim at the « potentates » of modern poetry but also, implicitly, those seeking the restoration of the monarchy.
Keywords: Corbière, ideology, revolt, republic, Parnasse.
421Yann Bernal, ‘‘Elzevirian to see. Types for the printing of Les Amours jaunes in 1873’’
This article considers the typface and the iconographical ornemantation of the original edition of Les Amours jaunes , which belong to the Elzevirian typography, and reviews its history to try to understand its meaning, its spirit, from the Renaissance to its revival in the 19th century. The article puts the spotlights on the unrecognized figure of the printer Alcan-Lévy, known then as a specialist in Elzevirian printings, and on the constrat between the elegance of his production and the intentionally messy aspect that Corbière gives to his poetics.
Keywords: Corbière, Elzevir, Elzevirian, typography, print, original edition, typeface, history of writing, ornementation, vignettes, banners.
