Through a careful reading of the report about the Salon of 1839, this article analyzes Mérimée's views about the painting of his time and, in the particular context of the Salon, aims to develop a more precise view about its aesthetic ideas. This is also the opportunity to address a facet of this writer that has hardly been studied.
