More than thirty years after La Venus d'Ille, Mérimée wrote a new story about a bloody wedding, Lokis, which unsurprisingly caught the attention of two Polish filmmakers, Janusz Majewski and Walerian Borowczyk. They would create two adaptations of it, polar opposites of one another, one inspired by the source narrative in the manner of an ethnographic study, the other using it very freely to make its fetishistic and obscene substratum shine with carnivalesque incandescence.
