The correspondence between Prosper Mérimée and François Jaubert de Passa reveals, in addition to a faithful friendship, that they influenced one another in their study of monumental archeology. While it is true that, by using his correspondent, the inspector of historical monuments promoted assuming responsibility for Roussillon’s heritage and the circulation of knowledge in scholarly circles, he also borrowed heavily from Jaubert for the Notes d’un voyage dans le Midi de la France.
