Images of duplication are inseparable from all of Prosper Mérimée’s work. Among all of these images, the presence of a portrait painted as a duplicate of certain characters in the story is a significant element. We aim to analyze how these pictorial replications fit into Mérimée’s narrative and the part they play in the author’s wider thinking on the power of the visual arts.
